San Diego Unified Probes Superintendent Lamont Jackson

San Diego Unified School District is currently conducting an internal investigation into Superintendent Lamont Jackson, although the reasons for the investigation have not been disclosed to the public. The district’s spokesperson, Maureen Magee, emphasized that all allegations received by the district are taken seriously and thoroughly investigated, but due to the nature of the situation, they are unable to provide specific details.

When San Diego Unified Board Member Sharon Whitehurst-Payne was asked about the investigation, she simply stated that “the lawyers are handling it,” indicating that legal experts are overseeing the process. Other board members declined to comment on the matter, maintaining a sense of confidentiality.

The district has enlisted the services of the Los Angeles-based law firm Sanchez & Amador to lead the investigation. The contract between the firm and the district allows for independent action without the need for board approval, highlighting the importance and urgency of the situation. Notably, Lupe Valenica, a partner at the firm specializing in workplace investigations, has been assigned to the case at a rate of $540 per hour, with estimated total services costing around $100,000.

Lamont Jackson assumed the role of Superintendent in 2022 following the departure of Cindy Marten, who was appointed as the United States Deputy Secretary of Education. With over 30 years of experience within the district, Jackson secured a four-year contract with an annual salary of $375,000, significantly higher than his predecessor’s pay.
