Escondido leaders recently made a significant decision that will impact the city’s future. The proposal for a 20-year, one-cent sales tax increase, known as the Escondido Community Investment Measure, is set to be on the ballot this November. This initiative, spearheaded by the citizens’ coalition Escondido Citizens for Safety, aims to generate approximately $25 million annually to address the city’s ongoing budget deficit.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Escondido residents will have a say on a sales tax hike. A similar measure was rejected in 2022, while a separate proposal was put forth to the City Council in 2020 without success. The current initiative garnered over 12,000 signatures, surpassing the required amount, prompting the council’s unanimous decision to send it to voters.
Notably, the ballot measure includes provisions such as a 20-year sunset clause and the establishment of a Citizens’ Oversight Committee to monitor the allocation of the new revenue. The council refrained from altering any aspects of the initiative before sending it for voter approval.
